No art is an island
To The Editor:
How to improve the artistic qualifications for the “Floating Island” (Arts article, Sept 23 – 29,“Art floats around Downtown”):
1) Allow at least one starving artist to live on it, who will maintain the grounds in lieu of rent. Other candidates include:
A small theater company that could put on continuous productions of Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” and Satre’s “No Exit.”
A small musical company can perform “Once Upon This Island.”
The whole company of Pilobolus dance troupe could form a cluster.
Ten starving poets who can get closer to nature by living in the treetop and reciting John Donne’s “No Man Is an Island.”
Musicians who can serenade us with either Venetian-styled arias, folk songs of riverboats or a rock band performing Simon and Garfunkel’s “I Am a Rock, I Am an Island.”

The Community Board 1 Fall Youth Fair, hosted at St. John’s University on Wednesday, September 28th was a success, with 28 local youth providers in attendance. It was a great opportunity to showcase the programs offered to children and teenagers to the 50-plus parents and children who attended the event, as well as raffle off great Yankees items as door prizes. Community Board 1 extends great thanks to St. John’s University for hosting the fall fair.
The Youth & Education Committee and Community Board 1 wish to extend deep appreciation to the providers including African Burial Ground, Battery Drumline, Battery Park City Day Nursery, Children’s Museum of the Arts, Digital Club House Network, Downtown Little School, DYCD Youthline, Education Alliance School, Financial History Museum, Girls Scouts of America, Infant Toddler Pre-school Post 9-11 Initiative, Jewish Community Project, Manhattan Children’s Theatre, Manhattan Youth, Murray Street Dance Studio, Museum of Jewish Heritage, Naga Yoga, New Amsterdam Branch Library, Park Preschool, Rebecca Kelly Ballet/Kids Co-Motion, The River Project, Safe Horizons, The Skyscraper Museum, Synagogue for the Arts, T.
