Manslaughter plea

Michael Brown, charged with murder in the Sept. 21, 2005 shooting death of Thomas McKinney after an argument in Mission Bar and Lounge on Bowery at Rivington St., pleaded guilty on Nov. 27 to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. Brown will be sentenced Jan. 18, 2007 and is expected to receive a 16-year prison term as a result of the plea bargain.

The shooting in front of Mission Bar and Lounge followed an argument over a spilled drink with the victim inside the club. A homeless man, Jeffery Dudley, 49, who was lying on the sidewalk at the time, was hit in the ankle when Brown opened fire. Brown had been arrested on a weapons charge before the shooting and McKinney was on parole after a gun conviction.
